ALBA Advocates is pleased to introduce Hon. Justice Dr Henry Peter Adonyo as a Consulting Partner.
Dr. Adonyo is a highly respected and seasoned judicial officer who has recently retired from the Bench.
Dr Adonyo has a wealth of experience as a judicial officer. He previously served as the Head of the High Court of Uganda (Commercial,International Crimes Divisions and as Senior Resident Judge).
He also served as the Executive Director Judicial Training Institute.
His first appointment as a judge was at the High Court of Uganda, Commercial Division.
Dr Adonyo is a career judicial officer, who rose through the ranks from the position of Magistrate Grade One, Chief Magistrate, Registrar and Chief Registrar.
He has a wide experience in all areas of adjudication with particular expertise in Commercial Law and Land Land. He has to his credit several landmark judgments and rulings.
Dr Adonyo is equally an experienced administrator and manager, who over the years has played a leading role in Legal and Judicial reforms not only in Uganda, the East African region and beyond.
He has to his credit the Computerization of the Justice System, Initiatives such as the Small Claims , the Chainlink, Plea Bargain, Mediation , Legal Aid, Simplified Civil and Criminal procedure rules, court buildings, Justice Law and Order Sector initiatives, Penal Reforms (Community Service Program and Prisons’ Reforms, the creation of the Anti Corruption Court as well as the Implementation of the Juba Agreement between the Government of Uganda and the Lord’s Resistance Movement/Army by creating not only a mechanism for accountability in the form of the International Criminal Division of the High Court of Uganda but the putting in place a Transitional justice system; among many others.
His distinguished leadership was instrumental in advancing strategic approach in the handling Case Backlog in the whole of the justice chain resulting in substantial reduction of case backlog.
Dr Adonyo as chair the first ever Uganda Judiciary Case Census produced a report which informed the extent of case backlog in the Judiciary of Uganda with well researched measures on how to tackle it.
As a Judge, Dr Adonyo has handled high profile cases including those reiterating the importance of implementation by Treaty Countries issued arrest warrants, Personal Intellectual Rights, financial and banking sectors. His expertise in the law has made it possible the improvement of the performance of the financial and banking sectors in Uganda.
Dr. Adonyo holds a Bachelor of Law degree from Makerere University, an MBA from the East and Southern Africa Management Institute/Maastricht Business School, a research based Doctoral degree from the Atlantic International University of Hawaii, USA.
He is a founder member of the African Judicial Exchange Network, Global Judicial Integrity Network, Member of the Commonwealth Magistrates and Judges Association, founder member of the Justice Law and Order Sector of Uganda, founding chair of the Justice Centers of Uganda(JCU), founder member of the Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) and a host of very many other.
His strategic vision and broad experience will undoubtedly be a great asset to ALBA Advocates.
